Malakass is a brand new brand of cassava flour made from fresh cassava grown in southwest Madagascar. The leader of this project, Houssen Mebobaly, was in Reunion on February 12 for its launch on the island.

Once again, the Leclerc stores in Reunion are showing initiative by distributing this new product without equivalent on the Reunion market. Naturally gluten free (less than 3 mg per kilo), without additives or preservatives, Malakass is a cassava flour resulting from organized agricultural know-how and a rigorous industrial process. It is distinguished by its purity, its stability, its taste neutrality, and its nutritional qualities. Tested by Eurofins, Malakass flour is certified as complying with international standards. The specifications of its packaging, developed with the support of the Regional Center for Innovation and Technology Transfer (Crit) Of the reunion, allows the brand to access the French and European markets while respecting standards and legal notices.
Reconnecting with the “Creole body”
The export of the product naturally begins with Reunion Island., which shares dietary practices with the Big Island. Riz, manioc, sweet potato, grains : these foods formed the basis of the Creole and Malagasy diets. Return to cassava, it’s reconnecting with a regional food identity, what the brand calls “the Creole body”. A philosophy summed up by the signature of Malakass : “The gluten-free alternative that respects our body… and our roots. »

An independent nutritional audit
Led by Dr Fridor Funteu, nutritionist and dietician, analyzes show that Malakass flour has low fat and sugar contents. It is an interesting natural source of dietary fiber and magnesium.. Thanks to the presence of resistant starch, its glycemic index is moderate. It has excellent storage stability., higher than that of wheat flour. Qualities that fit, among others, in the priorities of the Reunion nutrition and fight against diabetes and obesity program.
A human and social project
This project supports more than 200 families within a radius of around a hundred kilometers around Tuléar. New cultivation methods, harvesting and processing have been put in place to guarantee quality, regularity and traceability of the product. The Malakass brand is supported by the Malagasy impact fund Miarakap. It also counts among its partners François Mandroux, foreign trade advisor from France to Madagascar, who worked on the marketing positioning and communication of the product on the Malagasy and Reunion markets.
