The construction of the M4 motorway, which will connect Forbach (northern Mauritius) in Bel Air (east of the island) will start in three months. This two times three tracks, 30 kilometers long, must enter service in 2029. Costing 10,8 billion rupees (approximately 196 million euros), it will be financed by India as part of the “Special Economic Package” cooperation program.. The new motorway should significantly reduce traffic jams on the road network in the areas it will cross. It will have three elevated interchanges, of twelve roundabouts, two flyovers, and a tunnel.

Tourism : signs of slowing down
During the first four months of 2026, Mauritius welcomed 464,208 tourists and cruise passengers – up 4% compared to 2025. This progression is mainly driven by that of the number of cruise ship passengers.. Since March, the number of travelers arriving by air is declining. For the month of April only, it fell by 8%. The war against Iran and its consequences on air traffic in the Gulf countries explains this trend which worries the Mauritian tourism sector., a significant portion of whose customers usually pass through the hubs of Doha and Dubai. Arrivals from Europe fell by 12% in April (25% for those from the United Kingdom). The increase in the number of tourists from India and China is not enough to compensate for this decline.
Electricity consumption under surveillance
While Mauritian electricity production is still largely carbon-intensive, notably produced from heavy fuel oil imported from the United Arab Emirates, the government has taken coercive measures to reduce consumption. Wasteful behavior, especially in public buildings and shopping centers, can now be subject to sanctions. In mid-May, eight violations of the new “anti-waste” regulations had already been noted in a shopping center, at the Port-Louis bus station, or in public colleges… At the same time, Mauritius is looking for new sources of supply of heavy fuel oil to no longer suffer from the blockage of maritime traffic in the Strait of Hormuz.
