Threats to electricity production

Mauritius' electricity production is seriously threatened by the cessation of operations at the Fujairah oil terminal (United Arab Emirates), where does the fuel oil go from for the Saint-Louis thermal power plants?, Fort Victoria and Fort George.
All three units provide, ensemble, about 40% of the country's electricity. But at the beginning of March, a boat which was supposed to transport the fuel intended for them was unable to leave the Persian Gulf due to threats to maritime traffic in the Strait of Hormuz.
The three Mauritian power plants have stocks representing between one month and one and a half months of production, and the Mauritian authorities began to look for other supply routes.

The trade deficit widened in 2025

The decline in export revenues and growth in imports led to an increase in the Mauritian trade deficit in 2025 : 211 billion rupees (almost 4 billion euros), against 208 billion the previous year. Last year, the main supplier countries of Mauritius were China (17,4 %), the United Arab Emirates (10,9 %), India (8,2 %), South Africa (6,5 %), France (5,9 %), and Germany (3,3 %). Mauritian exports, as for them, were mainly intended for South Africa (12,6 %), in the United States (10,5 %), in the United Kingdom (9,7 %), in Madagascar (9,4 %), to France (8,2 %), to Spain (7,1 %), and in Reunion (4,2 %). The first forecasts for 2026 show a decrease of 0,5% of the Mauritian trade deficit compared to 2025, with a slight growth in imports but a rise in exports.

New shopping center in Flacq

The first stone of the Flacq mall, in the east of Mauritius, was asked on February 18 by the project promoters, the Alteo and Ascencia groups. The shopping center will cover 25,000 m2, next to a main road and close to the new motorway planned in the area. The two promoters will inject a total of 2,5 billion rupees (approximately 46 million euros) in the project which should create a thousand jobs upon its opening in July 2027.
