The results of the INSEE survey on salaries paid in the private sector in Reunion, based on 2023 data, reveal a level even lower than those paid in mainland France, but also a reduction in this gap.

Half of Réunion private sector employees received net remuneration of less than 1,780 euros per month in 2023. This median net salary is 6 lower,6% to that in provincial France (outside Île-de-France). However, wage inequalities have been reduced on the island, thanks to a more dynamic progression of low salaries than of high salaries. They even become slightly less marked than in the provinces. On the other hand, the gap has widened in terms of average salary, which amounts to 2,260 euros on the island, less than 8,6% to that in the provinces, underlines INSEE. This unfavorable development affects all socio-professional categories, including frames. The latter, however, are an exception. ; the only category that is always better paid on the island than in the provinces. Women are paid less than men, with a lower average net salary of 4,9% to that of men. The lower average salaries on the island largely reflect the structure of the local economy, composed of a less qualified workforce than in the provinces and smaller companies. Differences in the composition of employment and the productive fabric also result in different salary levels depending on the sector.. Average salaries are highest in those with more managers and large companies : legal activities, scientists, financial or even information and communication. On the other hand, average salaries are lower in commerce or personal services.
