This is what the training and coaching organization Fasterclass says. : nearly one in two French people would be afraid to ask for sincere feedback for fear of weakening their professional image. Survey of more than 3,100 French workers on their relationship to criticism and their way of reacting to it.
Unfiltered feedback remains difficult to receive. Only 41% of French people would accept being told a harsh truth even if it could help them move forward. Among them, only 15% say they are fully prepared to do so while 26% acknowledge that they would have difficulty accepting it. Conversely, an equivalent proportion, 42 %, prefer to keep this confrontation at a distance or are highly suspicious of it. And the remaining 17% ? Their opening depends above all on the sender of the message. Clear, It’s not just the truth that matters : it is also the legitimacy of the person who formulates it.
When criticism leaves you speechless
A remark can fall like a cleaver, especially when you didn't see it coming. And it is a widely shared experience : 69% of respondents say they have already been destabilized by an unexpected criticism, of which almost a third more than once. Conversely, 28% have never really been affected by hurtful or abrupt comments. Proof that criticism is not only based on substance : its effect also depends on its form, de son timing, and the capacity of each person to cash it.
Negative feedback triggers self-defense
Faced with a difficult remark, the first reflex is not always to listen. Among many French people, negative feedback above all activates a protective posture. So, 23% prefer to move the subject by contesting the legitimacy of the person making the criticism. 21% immediately enter into the explanation or justification. Conversely, only 17% adopt a truly constructive approach : seek to clarify, dig deeper and understand what can be improved. A strong signal : feedback does not automatically produce progress. To become useful, he must first pass the defensive wall.
A risk for the image ?
Soliciting a frank opinion remains an uncomfortable exercise. 49% of French people admit to dreading this moment for fear of damaging their professional image. In details, 16% say they fear it strongly and 33% more moderately.
However, not everyone experiences criticism as a threat. 28% do not fear it , and 11% even see it as a lever for personal strength. An interesting paradox : what seems to weaken at the time can on the contrary strengthen credibility. Ask for honest feedback, it’s showing that we want to progress, adjust your practices, do not remain prisoner of your blind spots. Ask for feedback, it is anything but an admission of weakness, on the contrary, it is a marker of requirement : that of a motivated person, attentive to details and determined to progress. Well used, feedback becomes an opportunity to consolidate your professional reputation.
