Gender inequalities remain marked

On the occasion of International Women's Day, March 8, INSEE has compiled its most recent data on inequalities between men and women in Reunion. They are still marked. Only 45% of women living on the island have a job compared to 53% of men. In mainland France, women have more access to employment (65%), with a slightly less marked gap with men (71%). When they work, women receive lower salaries than men. The average net hourly salary in 2020 amounts to 13,20 euros for women in Reunion, i.e. 7% less than for men. This gap is, however, half as high as in France (15%). Indeed, public jobs, less unequal in terms of remuneration, are more numerous on the island. Furthermore, executive jobs, in which women are paid much less than men, are less common there. Women work more part-time (32% compared to 13% among men in 2021). For half of them, this part-time is suffered.
