On March 19, the Departmental Council launched the commemoration of 80 years of departmentalization in Reunion Island.. At the initiative of the Department, several events relating to this anniversary will follow one another during the year.
The exhibition “80 years of departmentalization, 1946-1970, First Looks” is to be discovered at Sir Seewoosagur Rangoolam Square (in front of the State Garden). As well as a wall fresco created by middle school students, rue de la Source. It was unveiled in the presence of the orchestra classes of the Adrien Cerneau college and the La Montagne college, the latter being performed for the occasion the national anthem, The Marseillaise. A film on departmentalization was also broadcast, and the Departmental Prize of Merit was awarded to 22 Reunion Islanders, major witnesses of departmentalization. It was on March 19, 1946 that Réunion, Guadeloupe, Martinique and Guyana changed status following the vote, by the National Assembly, of a text defended in particular by the deputies Raymond Vergès for Réunion and Aimé Césaire for Martinique.
