The strategic committee formed in 2021 to manage the development of an area of more than 70 hectares located behind the East Port decided on March 11 to launch a study to define the vocation of this land reserve, ideally placed to accommodate economic activities. In addition to logistical equipment, it could in particular house production and processing activities intended for export. The “back port area” is owned by the departmental council. The TCO is also a stakeholder in the file, since intermunicipality has jurisdiction over areas of activity. The region, leader of economic action and manager of European funds, also participates in the committee, just like the municipality of the Port, the Grand Maritime Port and the State, who decreed a few years ago that the area constituted a Project of General Interest (PIG). In April 2021, the departmental council and the Grand Port Maritime had signed an agreement reserving 15 hectares of the rear port area for the latter to relieve congestion on the docks of the East Port. The development of these areas will begin urgently, so that the first hectares will be usable from 2023.
