From January to July, Port Réunion handled 3,5 million tonnes of goods, “i.e. a level higher than that reached at the same period in 2019, record year », indicates the Grand Port Maritime de La Réunion. In 2020, port traffic had fallen by 3,7%, at 5,3 million tonnes : a limited decline, in the midst of a health crisis. During the first 7 months of the year, approximately 232,000 TEU containers were handled, including 67,000 in transshipment. “If the trend continues, the forecast at the end of the year would be around 110,000 TEU, close to the absolute record of 2019 (111,000 TEUs transhipped) », estimates the large port, which also underlines “the difficulties that the entire Reunion port community must face in the unstable context of global maritime transport”, and welcomes “the effort made by shipping companies to remove empty containers and thus desaturate the platforms”. At the same time, the Grand Port Maritime continues its investments, particularly at the container terminal.
