An INSEE study on the orientation of young people who obtained their baccalaureate in 2022 in Reunion shows that four out of five students accept an offer to register on the island for their first year in higher education.

Reunion neo-bachelors are more often graduates of a professional or technological baccalaureate than elsewhere. They are therefore moving more towards a BTS, in particular for those who have a mention in the professional baccalaureate. These orientation choices are linked to the social origin of young people, estimates INSEE. So, the most advantaged students mainly take a general baccalaureate, then choose more to go to medicine, in prep class or in engineering or business school. However, in the meeting, these prestigious courses bring together more students from modest origins. In addition, the choice of courses differs more than elsewhere between girls and boys. 78% of students who have expressed a wish to enroll in literary preparatory classes are girls, while they are only 29% for scientific preparatory classes and engineering school training.. Girls are also more numerous than elsewhere to choose a BUT and a BTS Services. At university, the choices of girls and boys also differ : the economics-management degree attracts 59% of girls compared to 48% in France. Conversely, girls are even less represented than elsewhere in STAPS. Students from Reunion Island wish to leave their region less often than in comparable areas which do not have a very broad training offer.. It is especially students with a professional or technological baccalaureate who leave less often than elsewhere. Students in the general series and those from a privileged family environment “jump the sea” much more often.
