The Reunionese sorted an average of 37 kg of packaging and papers per capita in 2023, According to a Citeo study, the eco-organization in charge of household paper and packaging, within the framework of extended producer responsibility.
This figure is divided between 18 kilos of light and paper packaging – steel packaging, aluminum, cardboard, plastic bottles and vials, papers – and 19 kilos of glass packaging sorted per inhabitant. Sorting of light packaging increased overall by 24% in 2023. In parallel, the quantity of sorted glass packaging stagnates, in the meeting (+1 %) like nationally, due in particular to the drop of 2,5% of the deposit put on the market. Regarding graphic papers, the inhabitants of Reunion sorted an average of 6 kilos in 2023, a falling figure (-21 %) to be put into perspective with the structural decline in papers placed on the market, due in particular to the end of advertising leaflets and the decline in the paper press market. The deployment of additional local collection terminals to facilitate the sorting process allows an increase in the sorting and recycling of household packaging and paper, believes Citeo, who has already financed, alongside communities, 250 bornes : 170 terminals for sorting glass packaging and 80 for sorting light and paper packaging, to the tune of almost a million euros.
