The first major survey on physical and sporting practices in Reunion was carried out by the university and Ipsos at the end of 2021 among 2,000 people aged 15 and over. Its results, recently presented, demonstrate a wide diffusion of physical and sporting activities. 81% of those questioned said they had practiced an activity (excluding school physical education) at least once in the last twelve months. Among these declared practitioners, 73% say they do an activity more than once a week and 77% say they do their activity outside of any sports structure. Among the 20 most declared activities, the first nine are : walking (53 %), hiking (29 %), cycling (15 %), jogging-jogging-running-running (13 %), bodybuilding (13 %), swimming in the lagoon (11 %), mountain biking on trails and paths (9 %), athletic walking (9 %) and football (9 %). Health and well-being motivations are cited by 76% of practitioners, competition by only 9% of responses.
