Since the beginning of the 21st century, the retail industry has transformed at an unprecedented pace. In 2000, one year after the launch of Amazon and eBay, e-commerce in France was in its infancy : the percentage of retail sales made online was just 0,14 %.
Twenty-five years later, the e-commerce market is showing signs of maturity, omnichannel commerce is the new normal and competition is fiercer than ever.
From technological improvements driven by artificial intelligence to the significant expansion of e-commerce platforms, through the rise of social commerce, the next phase of e-commerce will be shaped not only by technological advances, but above all by new consumer behaviors. Service expectations, delivery times and delivery costs take on a greater magnitude. So, 61,3% of French people say they would change brands if more convenient delivery options were available, while almost half (49,7 %) would consider another option in case of disappointment.
The rise of e-commerce platforms
E-commerce platforms have become a dominant force in e-commerce, and their influence continues to grow. Online sales platforms like Amazon continue to lead the way, used by 71,1% French users. in parallel, second-hand sites like eBay or Vinted are gaining popularity, 34,8% of French people have already made a purchase on these sites. However, 47,7% of French consumers are looking to increase their activity on second-hand sites and 49,6% plan to buy more on marketplaces in 2025. As consumer habits evolve, merchants should adopt marketplace strategies to expand their reach, drive their growth and stay ahead in the competitive e-commerce landscape.
