Over-indebted households under the microscope

Since 2022, The Issuing Institute of Overseas Departments is carrying out a typological survey on over-indebted households in the French Overseas Territories.

Same method as that used by the Banque de France : this involves studying the profile of over-indebted households in France. The 2025 survey reveals quite diverse typologies from one department to another. The share of single-parent families among over-indebted households is lower in Reunion than elsewhere, even if it is the most indebted category of all the DOM. And unlike the Antilles and Guyana, single men are more often over-indebted than single women. Over-indebted employed Reunion Islanders are fewer in number than in other overseas departments and mainland France, but the unemployed are more unemployed than elsewhere. The most overindebted socio-professional category on the island is that of employees, which represent half of Reunion households in this situation. The median amount for an over-indebted household is 17,582 euros. Financial debts, particularly those linked to consumer loans, represent three quarters of this total. They are far ahead of those linked to rent, to electricity, to water or to telephone. On average, five categories of debt appear in an overindebtedness file in Reunion.
