The Grand Port Maritime has invested nearly 7,7 million euros, with the State and Europe, in the rehabilitation of quay no. 1 of the West port, mainly used by Sapmer to unload catches from its longliners and lobster boats, L’Austral. L’infrastructure, built in 1957, presented a risk of subsidence and the circulation of heavily loaded equipment had to be limited there.
It was officially inaugurated on May 9, in the presence of prefect Jacques Billant and Huguette Bello, president of the meeting region. the Grand Port Maritime recalled on this occasion the investment programs underway at the West Port. Several acquisitions will be made in the coming months to benefit the fishing sector, pour 1,1 million d’euros : a new generation ice silo, compliant with new European environmental requirements, an unloading crane and floating pontoons for small fishing boats. The project to set up a floating dock, which will allow boats 100 meters long and 4,000 tonnes to be hoisted out of the water, also continues its course. However, it is disrupted by the international situation and the Grand Port Maritime is now considering investing in a second-hand dock., more readily available. But in this case, he should give up European subsidies, which can only concern new equipment. The ambition of Port Réunion is to support the structuring of a ship repair sector, in the wake of the installation of the Piriou construction site.
