During his visit to Reunion in mid-February, the Minister of Overseas Territories also spoke with representatives of the economic world about the explosion in maritime freight costs observed since the end of 2020. Added to this is a sharp increase in the prices of certain raw materials : the two factors combined are starting to fuel an inflationary trend that the public authorities would like to be able to control, to avoid the return of discontent against the high cost of living, particularly on the eve of the next electoral deadlines. February 14, a charter was signed in the presence of Sébastien Lecornu by maritime transport stakeholders, import and distribution. The signatories undertake to secure the island’s supply and to “ensure better visibility and transparency on price developments”, but are careful not to assert that they will be able to contain inflation in the coming months.
