WHAT IS LEADERSHIP ?

During their professional careers, for over twenty years, Sylvie and Annick Miquel support entrepreneurs, teams, heads of private or public bodies. Since 5 years, BNI regional directors in Reunion, since March 2021 BNI national directors in Mauritius, and also certified John Maxwell Coach (Masterminds, Leadership game…), they continue their actions alongside entrepreneurs in the Indian Ocean region. A primordial notion is at the center of their activity, and is still the subject of workshops, of exchanges and reflections : le leadership.

When we think about it, the notion of leader can be applied differently to, For example, a parent providing their child with the right environment to grow and express who they are, a politician positively disrupting the history of his community, an entrepreneur accompanying his business towards success, an athlete carrying his team to victory, a religious personality improving the daily lives of others through his actions... We all know people capable of helping us grow, to get involved in their projects. These people are all leaders. So what is leadership? ? Leadership can be defined as the ability to unite, to make others want to get involved and mobilize energies around collective action. Leadership is not backed by status, nor to a function : it is based on mutual trust. It is because others recognize him as such that the leader has the capacity to make them act.. First of all, the vision : the leader carries the vision of a better future which gives meaning to his actions and to those he asks others to carry out. We all need a reason to motivate our actions, a “why” that will allow us to give the best of ourselves. Besides, have you identified your own vision ? Then the motivation : motivating individuals on a daily basis and uniting different people around a common cause helps create group cohesion and give rise to a feeling of belonging.. Members of a group must be able to count on the support of their leader and feel it, have at hand the necessary means to act, see their efforts recognized and know that there is an attentive person near them.
Be at the service of the team, and not the opposite
By accompanying, the leader transmits his knowledge and skills in order to lead those involved to progress, to develop personally and professionally. In summary, There are no rules. Different leaders will use different personal qualities and different aspects of their personality in different circumstances.. The definition of leadership has nothing to do with hierarchy or position occupied, it also has nothing to do with imposing opinions, but rather to listen to those who know. Leadership is the attitude adopted by people who seek something different, who are committed to achieving a goal and who manage to transmit their conviction to others thanks to their vision and optimism, all to achieve a common goal. “Leadership is the ability to create an inspiring vision of the future, to motivate, to be of service to others and to support them, in order to collectively realize this vision. »

WHAT DO WE EXPECT FROM A LEADER ?
Whether feminine or masculine, a leader must have the ability to make sense of issues, have a great imagination to imagine an exciting future, have operational know-how, know how to translate a strategy into concrete actions, cultivate employee engagement around projects… but does this person exist? ? Not really. So how to build effective leadership ?

1) Let's recognize our strengths and weaknesses : the sooner we will stop wanting to embody everything, the sooner we will recognize our imperfection, the sooner we will be able to compensate for our weaknesses thanks to the people around us, the better our businesses will be.

2) Let's be collaborative : by distributing responsibilities and initiatives more widely, it becomes possible to coordinate larger actions. Let it manifest, at every level of the company, an expertise, a vision, new ideas, commitment.

3) Let's act through four interdependent axes :

Meaning : understand the context in which we operate, the impact of new technologies, evolving expectations and cultural changes… to make sense of the world around us.
Relationships : know how to build relationships of trust by listening in order to understand, know how to explain your own point of view while having understood that of others, and know how to build a network to stay connected with people who can help us accomplish all kinds of goals.
Vision : succeed in getting our troops excited about our exciting vision of the future, while offering them to contribute to its realization, and by ourselves putting our words into action.
L’invention : imagine the processes that will bring our vision to life, by imagining and designing new ways to interact and organize ourselves, by being creative to help our employees find new ways of working together.
No leader, however, cannot excel in each of these four skill areas. We need to know how to surround ourselves by constructively soliciting those around us., by being creative and creating an environment in which each other’s strengths and weaknesses are balanced. Are you ready ? We YES ! SO, on the way to your vision !

MANAGEMENT ET LEADERSHIP
Motivation for some, results for others, or even inspiration : not so easy to define leadership. And management, leadership is the ability to mobilize the resources of employees to achieve set objectives.

  • Have a vision and share it to inspire.
  • Motivate to release potential and channel energies.
  • Put yourself at the service of others, and not the opposite.
  • Showing empathy, bring out the best in everyone.
  • Be creative and learn from those around us.
  • Be demanding while knowing how to offer the necessary time and resources.
  • Knowing how to serve as a guide while encouraging initiative.
  • Have a positive attitude and know how to give confidence.
  • Detect opportunities, know how to take risks and have the courage to rectify.
  • Seek continuous improvement for others and for yourself.

Leadership is the attitude adopted by people who seek something different.
