Diplomatic chill between Mauritius and the Maldives
Mauritius suspended its diplomatic relations with the Maldives on February 27, who decided to no longer recognize Mauritian sovereignty over Chagos. In 2025, the archipelago, which is home to a major US military base in Diego Garcia, had been officially returned to Mauritius by the United Kingdom. But the finalization of this agreement is slow, against a backdrop of declarations hostile to this operation, by Donald Trump. The Maldives are now putting back on the table an old claim to sovereignty over part of the Chagos waters.
