Ewa relaunched the Dzaoudzi-Antananarivo line

Ewa Air has relaunched the Dzaoudzi-Antananarivo line, last December 13, eight years after suspending it. The Mahorese company, Air Air Air subsidiary, operates two weekly flights between Mayotte and the Malagasy capital, Monday and Saturday. Tickets start at 499 euros for a round trip. The connection has been re-established seasonally, until March. Ewa, which operates with one of its two ATR 72-600s with 64 seats, will decide to continue the experience if the clientele is there. In 2017, it had given up serving Tana due to insufficient attendance, but also difficult relations with the Malagasy air authorities.

Mayotte, department and region since January 1

We must now speak of “assembly of Mayotte” and no longer of “departmental council of Mayotte”. Since January 1, the Mahoraise community is elevated to the rank of regional department, like Guyana and Martinique. This transformation appeared in the law for the refoundation of Mayotte, voted in August 2025, it was confirmed by a decree published in the Official Journal on December 31. The assembly of Mayotte now exercises the powers devolved to the departmental councils and regional councils. During the next departmental and regional elections, in 2028, the number of elected officials will increase from 26 to 52, distributed between 13 territorial sections, whose number of seats will be fixed in proportion to the population. The vote will be proportional in two rounds.

France Volunteers sets up

Ben Issa Ousséni, president of what was still the departmental council of Mayotte, signed an agreement with France Volontaires on November 29 during the regional cooperation conference organized in Reunion. France Volontaires will soon set up in Mayotte to facilitate access for young people from Mahor to the VSI system (international solidarity volunteering).

Participation in the Island Games under discussion

On January 15, the Mayotte assembly launched a consultation process regarding Mayotte participation in the next Indian Ocean Island Games., which will take place in August 2027 in the Comoros. If athletes from Mayotte now have the opportunity to take part in competitions, the charter of the Games prohibits them from displaying the French flag, due to the non-recognition of the island's attachment to France, fifty years ago. A majority of elected officials seem in favor of participation, at this stage of the debates. The sporting world, consulted during a new discussion session on January 18, is for its part in favor of participating in the Games, in its vast majority. The debates are far from over and have a very concrete dimension : the assembly of Mayotte will have to provide a budget of five million euros if participation is decided.
