Electricity production remained stable in 2025

3,064 gigawatts were produced in 2025 in Reunion, i.e. a level roughly equivalent to that of 2024. The highlight of last year ? Obviously the passage of cyclone Garance on February 28, which caused considerable damage to the networks, mainly in the east of the island.

By destroying 21 pylons on two very high voltage lines and also the Orgues water intake which supplies the Rivière de l’Est power station in Sainte-Rose, the storm caused the share of hydroelectricity in the Reunion electricity mix to drop. It actually rose to 7,7% only over the year, bringing the island’s electric autonomy down to 26,6% compared to 31% a year earlier. Other local sources of renewable energy are distributed between bagasse (5,9 %, a figure as low as that of 2024 due to the drop in cane production due to Belal then Garance) ; photovoltaics, which continues its regular production at 11% ; wind power (1,4 %) which is starting to rise with the strengthening of the capacities of the Total Énergies fleet in Sainte-Suzanne ; and biogas (0,7 %). Another highlight of 2025 : the record level of renewable energies in electricity production. He reached 96,6 %, heavy fuel oil and coal having been entirely replaced by liquid and solid biomass in the East Port power plants (EDF) and those of Bois-Rouge and Gol (Albioma). However, these fuels remain mainly imported and maintain Reunion’s energy dependence on the outside at a high level.. The only fossil fuel now used locally to produce electricity is non-road diesel, which powers the Port’s combustion turbines (EDF) and Saint-Pierre (Albioma). The TAC, activated to cope with occasional peaks in consumption, last year contributed 3,8% to the Réunion electricity mix.
