In 2019, the 355 companies of the industrial-port complex of Reunion employed 5,670 employees, including 55% in the maritime sector, according to an INSEE study devoted to the economic activity generated by the commercial port between 2016 and 2019. These jobs represent 2,1% of total salaried employment on the island. They focus on the commune of Port (nearly 4,000), but also concern the municipalities of La Possession (580) and Saint-Paul (340 jobs in the Cambaie sector). Companies in the industrial-port complex generated an added value of 571,3 million euros, including 60% in the non-maritime sector. Their number of employees has increased significantly, of 3,3% on average per year, at a rate almost three times higher than that of total salaried employment in Reunion. This sharp increase affects both maritime and non-maritime companies., notes INSEE. On the other hand, only the added value of companies in the non-maritime sector increases over the period. In the maritime domain, added value falls due to decline in the fishing sector. “Fishing is the only maritime sector to experience a notable decline in its activity between 2016 and 2019., underlines the study, both in terms of jobs (from 590 to 550 jobs) what added value (of 85,4 million euros at 66,4 million euros). The sector has, indeed, experienced significant restructuring in a context of strong international competition.
