Outgoing President of the Union of the Comoros, Azali Assoumani was proclaimed winner of the presidential election in the first round with 62,97% of votes.
The former chief of staff of the Comorian army first took power in 1999 following a putsch. He has already held the head of the Comorian State for fifteen years : president, from 2002 to 2006, he was elected again in 2016, then in 2019. The mandate he began on January 16 must extend until 2029. His re-election, however, was the subject of heated dispute., the opposition denouncing “gross fraud”.
