The annual INSEE survey on the creation of added value by companies in the commercial sector (excluding agriculture and financial sector) sheds interesting light on the economic fabric of Reunion, by distinguishing between “companies” and “legal units”. A company, within the meaning of the 2008 economic modernization law, can be composed of several legal units, companies with their own legal identity. The vast majority of legal units in Reunion in 2022 (52 400) were at the same time companies, made up of a single company. By their side, 920 companies were made up of several companies, 2,980 legal units in total, and 910 companies were controlled by outside companies (see page 8). In total, these 56,290 legal units generated an added value of 9,2 billion euros in 2022, for a turnover of 31,5 billion. Only 49% of this added value was created by the 52,400 independent companies. The rest comes from companies belonging to groups. Seven out of ten legal units do not employ any employees, adds INSEE. The island's economic activity is mainly driven by structures with 10 to 249 employees., which brings together 56% of employees, achieve 55% of turnover and generate 49% of added value.
