The results of the last migration survey, family and aging, Made in 2020-2021, are particularly rich in lessons, because they allow a comparison with the first survey of this type, Made in 2010. We learn in particular that the natives of the island make up the vast majority of the population (79 % of 18-79 year olds). This share has decreased slightly since 2010, due to a slight increase in the proportion of natives of mainland France.
The share of natives who have never left the department is decreasing sharply, from 26% in 2010 to 15% in 2020. However, if the natives leave the island more and more often, it is above all for short stays (vacation, stage…) and not to settle down and live elsewhere for a job or further studies. Only 2 in 10 have already lived more than six months outside the island. Among young natives aged 18 to 34, only 4 out of 10 would agree to leave the island for a job.
