In a health context where the Covid-19 pandemic and dengue epidemic combine, the number of deaths occurring in Reunion since the start of 2021 is significantly higher than 2019, during the same period, announced INSEE in a study published on September 30. From January to August 2021, 3,820 people living on the island have died, i.e. 540 more deaths than in 2019 (+17%). In the first quarter of 2021, the number of deaths only increased by 5% compared to 2019. Then excess mortality is observed from March and in the second quarter of 2021. The excess deaths reach 26% compared to 2019, at a time of sharp deterioration in the health situation. In July and August, the number of recorded deaths remains 22% higher than the 2019 level. From January to August 2021, the excess mortality is a little more marked among people aged 75 or over (26% more deaths compared to 2019) only for those aged 65 to 74 (+ 18 %). The age group of 75 and over contributes 80% to the increase in deaths in 2021 compared to 2019 and that of 65-74 years contributes to the remaining 20%.. The increase in the number of deaths of elderly people is also partly explained by the aging of the population of Reunion Island., specifies INSEE.
