Work to extend the irrigated perimeter of Bras de la Plaine began at the end of October in the commune of Petite-Île. 377 additional hectares will be equipped in the Mont-Vert and Anse-les-Hauts sectors, thanks to the installation of 37 km of pipes, a 350 liter/second pumping station and a 4,000 m³ tank. 115 irrigation terminals will be installed, allowing the connection of 355 operators, if they decide to equip themselves. At a cost of 14 million euros, the operation is co-financed by the European Union and the Department. Over the next few years, the Departmental Council wishes to extend irrigation to more than 1,300 additional hectares in the south of the island, both to increase yields from sugarcane fields and encourage diversification. The community is also preparing to secure the water supply to the irrigated area of Champ-Borne, in Saint-André, while studies of the future Hauts de l’Est network have started.
