After the cooperative company Wincoop, it is the company NewTowt which is interested in the Reunion Island stopover in the Indian Ocean.
NewTowt is the result of the takeover, a few months ago, from the Towt company, fallen into judicial liquidation, by Crédit Mutuel and its RES fund (Environmental and social revolution).* Artemis, Towt's second sailing freighter, had made a stopover in Reunion Island on September 30, 2024 as part of its maiden voyage. Atlantis is the third cargo sailboat of the French company. It released at the port of Pointe-des-Galets at the beginning of September before continuing its navigation towards Brazil then towards Le Havre. Built like the two previous ones by Piriou in Vietnam, This commercial vessel with main sail propulsion measures 81 meters and can carry up to 1,000 tonnes of goods. The Atlantis stopover allowed economic players from Reunion – importing and exporting companies – as well as institutional partners to discover the ship and its operating conditions.. Goods can be shipped on pallets, in big bags or in other packaging compatible with the dimensions of the holds. The cargo sailboat can also load vehicles and dangerous goods. “Other vessels from the NewTowt construction program are expected to transit the Indian Ocean when they are put into service”, indicates the company. “These passages remain punctual and do not constitute the announcement of a regular line serving Reunion. They can nevertheless help to better qualify market needs and longer-term development opportunities.. " Currently, NewTowt boats are mainly used to transport coffee between Brazil and mainland France.
