After obtaining MSC Sustainable Fishing certification in July 2022 for Indian Ocean swordfish, the Réunion longline fishery obtained, in August 2026, the extension of its certificate to two new species : albacore tuna, and yellowfin tuna.
Supported by the Réunion interprofessional fishing and aquaculture association (Wing), this approach allows the entire Reunion longline fleet involved in the process to benefit from certification. To get it, Tuna stocks have been shown to be healthy, capable of renewing itself, and that the deployed pelagic longlines had no impact on the seabed.
The fishery is regulated at several levels, notably through the management measures adopted by the Indian Ocean Tuna Commission (CTOI) and the missions of the Regional Committee for Maritime Fisheries and Marine Farming (CRPMEM) Of the reunion.
In the coming years, MSC certification could be extended to other species.
