September 2, the Region announced the launch of an investment of 93 million euros in an underwater telecommunications cable which will connect Reunion Island to South Africa in two years.
Le Réunion New Indian Ocean Network (ReuNION) will replace the SAFE cable (South Africa Far East), who is reaching the end of his life. The project is carried out by a consortium formed by La Réunion Connectée (ex-Réunion THD) with Orange, the Océinde group (which operates the Zeop brand), and the Telco Indian Ocean group (marque Free). Ensemble, they will bring 36,5 million euros in infrastructure, which benefits from massive support from the European Union : 30 million du Feder, and 20 million from the Connecting Europe Facility fund. When ReuNION will be in service, La Réunion Connectée will market 12 of the cable’s 16 fiber pairs to international telecommunications operators, with the aim of preparing the next investment : the laying of a cable between Reunion and Singapore, which will require at least 250 million euros in financing.
