The Association for the Valorization of Sugars on Reunion Island has taken an important step in its approach to obtaining a Protected Geographical Indication for local sugar : February 1st, the Official Journal has published a ministerial decree approving the specifications for the “Sucre de l’île de Réunion” appellation, paving the way for the examination of the file by the European Commission.
“This progress marks the culmination of several years of collective work”, indicates Sylvie Le Maire, president of the association created for this purpose by the producers, industrialists and packagers. The project certainly aims to obtain a quality and origin label but also to promote the entire production chain., from the cultivation of cane to the transformation into sugar and its marketing. L’IGP, if it is obtained, will help build the reputation of local sugars, used by brands which do not highlight the origin and will give them an additional advantage on the European market.
