Consumers still cautious, according to Crédit Moderne

The annual study on household morale and consumption intentions was conducted by Crédit Moderne in January and February 2026 (200 people interviewed in Reunion).

This was before the start of the war against Iran, blocking the Strait of Hormuz, and the oil boom. No doubt for these reasons, the results show a certain increase in morale, with a rating of 5,4/10 against 4,8/10 last year. Despite this, consumption intentions remain stable compared to 2025, reflecting household caution in an economic context that remains uncertain and volatile, underlines Crédit Moderne. Saving intentions also remain stable from one year to the next. Travel or leisure are largely at the top of purchasing intentions, ahead of household appliances and DIY equipment. Intentions to purchase a new car remain very low. 95% of those surveyed consider that their prices have increased significantly in recent years. To bring them down, Reunion Islanders are ready to have vehicles with less on-board technology (37 %) and less powerful (35 %).
