Job creation weakens

The slowdown in job creation was confirmed in the second quarter, according to the latest economic report from INSEE. While 1,600 salaried jobs were created each quarter in 2022, only 800 were from April to June 2023.

The private sector ceases to carry the dynamic observed last year, when it created 2,000 jobs each quarter, linked to the attractiveness of apprenticeship contracts. Since the start of 2023, the use of these contracts decreases slightly : in June, 13,000 young people were in apprenticeship, i.e. 600 fewer than at the end of 2022. Commerce and business services are the rare sectors that create jobs. Housing construction and tourist numbers slow down. Business creations remain stable while failures increase. Just like in the first trimester, employment grows slightly in the public sector, after a year 2022 marked by 400 job losses on average each quarter. In this slightly less favorable context, the unemployment rate rises to 19% of the active population.
