This is the number of cases of leptospirosis recorded by the Regional Health Agency in Reunion between January 1 and April 19, 2022.. Of this total, 43 cases were reported in March and 35 in April. Among the 99 cases, 18 people were admitted to the intensive care unit and one person died from the disease. In 2021, 74 cases of leptospirosis were reported during the same period, requiring the majority of them to be hospitalized. Previous years, more than fifty cases had been recorded per year. The ARS calls for vigilance on the risks of this disease which is mainly contracted through contact with a humid environment. (mud, puddles of water…) contaminated by rat urine. Cleaning activities in yards and gardens without sufficient protection (bottes, gloves…) or swimming in fresh water after heavy rain are particularly not recommended.
