Mosquito sterilization shows its effectiveness

The campaign to release sterile male mosquitoes carried out since last year in an urban area in Duparc (Sainte-Marie) by the Research Institute for Development and supported by the Regional Health Agency (ARS) resulted in an average reduction of 50 to 60% in the natural fertility of Aedes albopictus tiger mosquitoes in the study area, announces the IRD. The release campaign, conducted between July 2021 and August 2022, covered an area of ​​20 hectares in the Duparc district of Sainte-Marie. Bois-Rouge, neighboring neighborhood with similar characteristics, was used as an untreated control site. Between 150,000 and 250,000 male mosquitoes, Sterile Aedes albopictus were released weekly for 52 weeks.
