The regional audit chamber of Reunion Island published a report on the Pierrefonds Mixed Union at the end of November 2025 (SMP), which operates the southern airport, for financial years 2019 and following.

The period was marked by the almost total cessation of commercial passenger transport in Pierrefonds., from the outbreak of the health crisis in March 2020. If the chamber recognizes the reason for a second airport, “indispensable as an emergency platform and support for strong general aviation activity”, it notes that its current economic model “is not sustainable and that its governance must be questioned”. The report identifies two possible directions. “The first would consist of relaunching regular commercial activity, based on reliable contracts and a controlled level of public aid, even if the chamber does not favor this option due to the lack of solid prospects and the financial risks it entails. The second would consist of abandoning this permanent commercial transport activity and initiating in-depth reflection on the optimization of a platform whose potential remains largely under-exploited.. Placed in receivership in February 2025, the Pierrefonds Mixed Union closed the 2024 financial year with a deficit of more than 5,6 million euros, placing him in a situation of cessation of payment. “At the same time, the SMP has not reduced its operating costs, in particular its payroll, already high compared to comparable establishments”, insists the report.
