Economic activity remained sustained in Reunion in the 1st quarter of 2022 despite the strengthening of health measures, according to an INSEE economic report. The volume of paid working hours remains significantly higher than its pre-crisis level, of the order of 10%. Tourist activity is returning to its pre-crisis level, despite a down month of February. The construction of new housing also remains very dynamic, while the number of business creations hits a new record. However, the increase in salaried employment slows significantly with 700 additional jobs compared to the 4th quarter of 2021. (+0,2 %), while around 3,000 additional jobs had been created in each of the three previous quarters. Business services, transport and non-market services are the only sectors to create jobs this quarter. In this context, the unemployment rate is almost stable and concerns 19% of the active population. The optimism of these indicators is tempered by price tensions, which increased with the outbreak of the war in Ukraine. The increase in material prices and supply difficulties will have particular consequences on construction activity., sectors for which socio-professional organizations have already sounded the alarm.
