Future of the cane industry : planters and industrialists with one voice

Planters and industrialists have temporarily buried the ax of war, the time to sign a joint motion asking the State for guarantees regarding its support for the Reunion cane-sugar sector. The text was submitted to the prefect on November 5. It is signed by the presidents of the Sugar Union, industrial representatives, of the Chamber of Agriculture and the four Reunion agricultural unions. Members of the Joint Cane and Sugar Committee, the interprofessional organization of the sector, were also involved in the process. The motion asks the State to make long-term commitments, in particular by maintaining the additional aid of 28 million euros per year granted to Tereos Océan Allemand since 2017 to compensate for the end of the quotas for the sale of sugar at a price guaranteed by Europe. The cane industry is indeed concerned about the conclusions of a report made public at the end of July by general inspectors, recommending drastic measures : support for the reconversion of the least efficient planters, the opening of Tereos' capital to local players or the matching of the purchase price of cane to the price of sugar.
