Tourist arrivals dropped at the start of the year
The 2025 tourist year is not starting badly for Mauritius, who sees the number of arrivals fall by 6,8 % in January and February compared to the same period of 2024. The start of breathlessness noted in January accentuated in February (-12,1 %). The three main issuing markets record decreases : -9,8 % for France, -4,9 % for the meeting and -12,5 % for the United Kingdom. In 2024, Tourist recipes measured by the Mauritius bank had increased by 8,8% compared to the previous year, at 93,5 billion rupees (environ 1,9 billion euros).
Economic statistics manipulated ? The IMF investigation
The International Monetary Fund will assess the reliability of economic statistics produced in recent years by the Ministry of Finance, Mauritius Bank, l’Economic Development Board et Statistics Mauritius, at the request of Prime Minister Navin Ramgoolam. The latter believes that major economic data has been handled by its predecessor to give a good image of its business management. GDP would thus have been "inflated" in 2023 and 2024 while the budget deficit was minimized at the end of the last two years.
