On the occasion of World Recycling Day on March 18, several players in the Reunion plastic bottle industry – Cilam, COT, Cilaos and the Bourbon Breweries, with the support of the eco-organization Citéo – launched a communication campaign to raise awareness among Reunion Islanders about sorting plastic bottles.
The campaign, « Boutey na 7 vies », aims to remind you that each correctly sorted plastic bottle can be recycled and contribute to the manufacture of new bottles. Every year in Reunion, nearly 200 million plastic bottles are placed on the market, or around 6,000 tonnes of plastic. However, according to Ademe data, the collection rate for recyclable packaging in Reunion Island is only 31% compared to 58% nationally. The majority of plastic bottles still end up in the gray trash or in nature.. However, PET is more than 95% recyclable and can be transformed into bottles, textiles or packaging after several processing steps : grinding, lavage, transformation into pellets and industrial reuse. The European objective of 90% collection by 2029 seems a little distant on the island but various projects have been opened to achieve it, starting with the simplification of sorting rules., which allows on January 1, 2026 to place all plastic packaging in the yellow bin.
