Waste management under the microscope

Since 2022, the regional audit chambers have the possibility of carrying out, on their initiative, evaluations of public policies at the territorial level.

The Reunion bedroom, for his first evaluation, chose the theme of waste management and prevention. Recently published, the results of this work reveal numerous negative findings. In terms of prevention of household and similar waste, For example, Reunion has not achieved the objectives set by the 2015 law of a 10% reduction in the quantities of waste produced per inhabitant between 2010 and 2020. Likewise, no tax incentive system has been established for waste by intermunicipalities. Separate collection volumes do not increase from year to year. If the quantities of residual household waste collected door to door stagnate between 2018 and 2023, those of recyclable waste even tend to decline. The absence of separate collection of bio-waste, mandatory in principle since January 1, 2024, is also highlighted by the judges. In conclusion, the regional audit chamber addresses a series of 13 recommendations to the communities and organizations concerned, aiming in particular to encourage reuse-reuse practices and advocating the transfer of prevention and collection skills to mixed unions, as well as a merger of unions into a single regional structure before the end of 2026.
