A tax on hotel nights
Starting October 1, a tourist tax of 3 euros will be applied to each night in Mauritian tourist accommodation, for customers aged 12 and over. The establishments concerned, hotel and guest houses, but also villas and tourist residences, will be responsible for collecting this tourist fee, that they will pay each month online. Mauritian residents or members of the diaspora traveling on a Mauritian passport will not have to pay the tax, just like foreign tourists benefiting from a free stay. Likewise, Rodrigues Island is not affected by this new provision which is making some people cringe in the hotel world. Tax revenues must be invested for the benefit of the tourism sector, particularly in the maintenance of busy sites.
Prices of certain regulated products
The fight against the high cost of living is also the subject of heated debates in Mauritius. The authorities recently established a price stabilization fund, aimed at lowering the prices of some basic necessities (edible oil, powdered milk…), but consumer representatives are surprised not to see a drop in products made with these ingredients, including yogurts. Consumer associations also sent the government in mid-September a new list of products whose prices they would like to see regulated..
Inflation de 4,8% in August
The inflation rate rose to 4,8% in August, year-on-year, selon Statistics Mauritius, down slightly compared to that of July (+5,2 %) but clearly increasing compared to August 2024 (+2,7 %). The consumer price index is also on the rise, going from 103,2 to 108,1 between August 2024 and August 2025.
Flood prevention : recommended habit changes
The catastrophic floods of recent years have led the Mauritian authorities to introduce stricter measures regarding drainage into the regulations.. A report published in September by the Ministry of National Infrastructure recommends changes in habits and a comprehensive approach to stormwater management. Porous pavers, permeable coatings and other filter beds are recommended.
