From February 15 to 21, l’ONG Marine Stewarship Council (MSC) mobilized to raise awareness of sustainable fishing as an ecological alternative solution. An approach to which the Reunion shipping company Sapmer adheres.
Reunion fishermen recognized by the organization's label are no exception and also highlight this certification (MSC) which allows consumers to spot products caught in a responsible and sustainable manner on the shelves. In the meeting, the southern lobster and toothfish fisheries operated in the French Southern and Antarctic Lands by the SAPMER shipping company, are both MSC certified. The preservation of marine resources and ecosystems is a consensus among citizens and fishermen. The former want to consume products whose origin they know. The latter want to have the exemplary nature of their work recognized. Initiated by the NGO MSC (Marine Stewardship Council), Responsible Fishing Week mobilizes all stakeholders concerned : scientists, fishermen, breeders, aquariums, companies, partner organizations and associations, etc. It is a privileged moment to highlight responsible fishing and aquaculture.. It encourages consumers to make eco-responsible choices to preserve the planet's marine resources for future generations..
Rigorous certification
In the meeting, the toothfish fisheries of Kerguelen and Crozet and the southern lobster fisheries of Saint-Paul and Amsterdam are MSC certified. “In order to achieve such certification, exemplary collaboration is essential between all stakeholders : the armament obviously, with our crews, the first actors at sea, but also scientists and the fisheries management administration. We therefore work in close collaboration with the community of the French Southern and Antarctic Lands., the National Museum of Natural History, the Chizée Biological Study Center and the services of the National Directorate of Maritime Fisheries and Aquaculture, including the National Fisheries Surveillance Center to guarantee exemplary fishing practices” explains Laurent Pinault, Director of Sustainable Development of the SAPMER group.
