Valls announces second naval base

A second national navy base will be built north of Grande-Terre, confirmed on March 12 Manuel Valls, Minister of Overseas. The decision will be officially taken within the framework of the-program law for Mayotte, in preparation. The future base will "guarantee the permanent surveillance of the approach to the territory", said the minister. The north of Grande-Terre is, indeed, the main entry point for illegal immigration from the Comoros. Currently, the national navy is based in Dzaoudzi (Petite-Terre), just like the local command of the national gendarmerie. A second command will also be established in Grande-Terre.

Gloomy economic indicators

The latest economic trends for Mayotte, published at the beginning of March by the Issuing Institute of Overseas Departments, testify to a degraded economic situation after the passage of Cyclone Chido, last December 14. The results of the Iédom quarterly survey are, however, biased by the fact that a certain number of companies could not be interviewed, failure to resume their activity, regarding the losses suffered. 93% of responding companies said they were insured, but the levels of coverage for claims and operating losses vary greatly. Chido also caused the business climate index to fall, which had experienced three consecutive quarters of increase, “witness the resumption of the dynamism of Mahorese economic activity”. It fell by more than 7 points at the end of the 4th quarter of 2024 and business leaders, interviewed between the end of January and the beginning of February, had the greatest difficulty making activity forecasts for the coming months.
