In September 2020, the Grand Port Maritime bought the “big houses” from the State, also called “engineers’ houses”. They were built at the end of the 19th century to accommodate CPR engineers., the company operating the new port of Pointe-des-Galets as well as the railway. Today they present a strong architectural and heritage interest. More, disused for many years, they are deteriorating quickly although they are listed as historic monuments. The Grand Port Maritime has launched a restoration program in order to establish its head office there. The new complex will also host a “Port Center”, place for educational promotion of port heritage and history. The submission of the planning permit is scheduled for May.
