The “Réunion Express” railway project, 140 kilometers long between Saint-Benoît and Saint-Joseph, via Saint-Denis and Saint-Pierre, is the central element of the roadmap signed on August 29 by the mobility organizing authorities : the Region and the five intermunicipalities of the island. The choice of transport by rail is based on the priorities expressed last year during the General Meeting of Mobility, who had collected nearly 11,000 citizen contributions.
Many Reunion Islanders regret the abandonment of the tram-train project and are calling for a credible substitute for the automobile. A public interest group will soon be formed to lay the foundations of a local company for major infrastructure projects, starting with the creation of the “Réunion express” rail network. A regional mobility plan, carried by the Region, will be intended to coordinate with the mobility plans established by the five intermunicipalities. A collective approach to labeling “Metropolitan regional express service” will also be initiated with the State, to allow priority access to specific national funding and reinforced technical support.
