The Import and Trade Union of Reunion Island (SURE) and ADEME presented the results of the Extended Producer Responsibility sectors (REP) during the Forum of actors of the ecological transition, September 28 at MOCA in Saint-Denis. In 2020, despite the health crisis and a slight drop in performance of certain sectors, the total volume of REP waste collected remains stable at 64,459 tonnes.
After a year punctuated by Covid-19 in 2020, the results of the REP sectors are intended to be satisfactory given the context. The pandemic has affected collections and this is reflected in the latest figures published by the SICR and ADEME, even if the total volume of waste collected remains stable. Indeed, the tonnage collected by the REP sectors present in the territory, went from 64,156 tonnes in 2019 to 64,459 tonnes in 2020. “Eco-organizations and collective organizations have suffered the repercussions of confinement and post-containment. Some sectors have had to stop their collection. We are therefore seeing a decline in some of them”, explains Sandrine Sinapayel, environment manager at SICR. This is the case, for example, for tires. (down 3%) ; clothing textiles, linens and shoes (down 6%) ; professional WEEE (down 8%) and non-household furniture (down 54%). Other sectors also show a decline : packaging and papers (down 4%) and waste from healthcare activities with infectious risks (down 8%). Fortunately, this trend is not the same for all sectors. An increase is noted for portable batteries and accumulators (up 4%) ; medicines not used for human use, expired or not (up 10%) ; photovoltaic panels (up 13%) ; automotive and industrial batteries (up 16%). Household WEEE (8,040 tonnes), the lamps (+ 65 %) and household furniture (+ 290 %) experience the greatest increases. For furniture, this sharp increase is due to the gradual deployment of the sector in the territory. Note that a new organization has also appeared. This is the end-of-life vehicle sector (VHU) abandoned, operational since 2020. 1,803 tonnes of waste, representing 2,003 abandoned ELVs, were collected across the island.
A priority for the SICR
A travers son site (https://dechets-rep.com), SICR presents waste management solutions. He regularly organizes events, like the Forum of actors of the ecological transition, to promote the commitment of the REP sectors and raise awareness among the general public and professionals about good sustainable practices. Valérie Chow-Ping-Mo, secretary general of the SICR : “The declines are the consequence of confinement. Despite this, we should note that the volumes collected are increasing from year to year. This is very positive and it is important to continue this dynamic. We would like to thank the players in these sectors who play a more than essential role in these performances.. With the Indian Ocean platform, our common objective is to facilitate the implementation of REP sectors, to make them known to professionals and the general public and to monitor the implementation of new sectors. »
