Jean-François Hoarau, professor of economics, was elected president of the University of Reunion, February 17th, by 21 votes to 14 to Richard Lorion, former director of university of technology.
Jean-François Hoarau will chair the university for a four-year term, thus succeeding Dr Jacques Comby, who has been providing provisional administration in recent months, after the dismissal of Frédéric Miranville.
“After a complex period for the University of Reunion, its agents and students, this new mandate begins with strong commitments, comments the management of the establishment. It aims to build a teaching space, research and innovation with respect for people, overcoming cultural differences, by transcending political and ideological differences, by accepting criticism and keeping debates alive. The objective is that everyone rediscovers the taste for commitment and that our institution reconnects with its vitality, its influence and its ability to inspire, bring together and transform the future for students and the region. »
The University of Reunion Island has been experiencing numerous internal conflicts for many years., who may not be ready to stop. Richard Lorion, the defeated candidate, was mainly supported by university staff, but outside figures on the board tipped the scales in favor of his opponent, who had the support of the Region. “I am convinced that under his leadership, the University of Réunion will regain stability and continue its development”, commented Huguette Bello, community president, shortly after the election of Jean-François Hoarau.
