North Airport : first works in 2027
20 million euros have already been released to allow work to begin on the future airport in the north of Grande-Terre in 2027, announced at the end of October Christophe Masson, project manager at the Directorate General of Civil Aviation. The State has definitively given up on building the long runway that Mayotte needs to improve its air service, especially with the metropolis, on the site of the current Pamandzi airport, on Petite-Terre. The new infrastructure will be built in Bouyouni, in the commune of M’Tsangamouji. Many studies are still necessary before the project is finalized, which will notably include the creation of a tunnel under the departmental road which serves the site to facilitate the passage of construction equipment. The commissioning of the airport is envisaged in 2036.
The public reconstruction establishment in action
The public reconstruction and development establishment of Mayotte (EPRDM) held its first board meeting on November 3, chaired by Ben Issa Ousseni, also president of the departmental council. The board of directors is made up of half local elected officials and half representatives of state services.. End of August, Benoît Gars, bridge engineer, was appointed to the position of general director of EPRDM, which aims to “secure the increase in load and accelerate the reconstruction” of the territory ravaged by Cyclone Chido on December 14, 2024. In particular, it will be able to replace municipalities to rebuild schools and eradicate slums..
Mayotte, medical desert
The regional health agency has placed the entire territory of Mayotte in a “priority intervention zone”, last September 29. This decision aims to encourage the installation of doctors in a department where there are only 1 per 2,000 inhabitants., against 3,5 nationally. Classification in a priority intervention zone allows bonuses to be paid for the installation, tax exemptions, financing for the purchase of equipment, aid for the creation of health centers… Likewise, maintenance bonuses, support for replacements and financing of coordination projects may be offered to caregivers already in post.
The State to support the departmental budget
An agreement signed in October between the State and the departmental council plans to release 100 million euros in favor of the community whose finances threaten to fall into the red. This sum will be provided by the State to finance social assistance for children and school transport., two extremely budget-intensive positions due to the demographic realities of Mahor. “Living and reception areas” will be opened by the departmental council to bring together siblings of unaccompanied minors and secure their educational path..
